What has been announced?
Around 100 NHS pharmacies in England are expected to begin cholesterol checks from autumn 2026, following an announcement on 31 August. The pilot is due to continue until spring 2027.
It adds another way for eligible people to discuss their heart health locally. The proposed service combines a finger-prick test with a consultation, rather than simply handing over a test result.
Who is the pilot for?
NHS England describes eligibility as people aged 40 to 84 who are not pregnant and have not had a blood test in the previous year. The participating pharmacy will need to confirm that the service is suitable for you.
Before making a trip, ask whether the pharmacy is taking part and whether the pilot has started there. Mention any recent blood tests when checking eligibility; the published age range alone does not confirm that you can use the service.
What happens during the check?
The finger-prick test is designed to analyse a cholesterol profile in about seven minutes. A pharmacist prescriber will discuss the results, offer lifestyle advice and consider whether treatment is needed. Eligible patients will also be offered a blood pressure check, and results will be sent by email.
The seven-minute figure refers to the test analysis. Allow time for the consultation as well, and ask the pharmacy how long to set aside.
Useful questions include what the result means for you, whether any follow-up is needed and who will arrange it. Ask the pharmacy about any preparation before attending.
Why check cholesterol if I feel well?
High cholesterol usually has no symptoms, so feeling well does not tell you what your level is. NHS guidance explains that a blood test is needed to identify it and that results can help inform a discussion about future heart attack and stroke risk.
David Webb, England’s chief pharmaceutical officer, said in the announcement: “Your local pharmacy can be a vital first line of defence against serious illness.”
The wider purpose is to identify people who could benefit from advice or treatment earlier. A result needs to be explained in the context of your health; it is not something you have to interpret alone.
What if my pharmacy is not taking part?
This is a limited pilot, not confirmation that NHS cholesterol checks are available at every pharmacy. Other pharmacies may offer cholesterol testing privately, so ask which service is being offered and whether there is a charge.
If you are concerned about cholesterol, speak to your GP surgery about testing rather than waiting for a pilot site to open. NHS guidance says you can ask about a test if you have never had one and are over 40, overweight, or have a family history of high cholesterol or heart problems.
